My dear Altrude
As usual you got ahead of me in saying “thank you Mam” for the candy before I could for the wonderful peachesThey were not only beautiful to look at but delicious to eat and we all thoroughly enjoyed them—and send you our united thanks and appreciation.
Now to the other part of your note which we have given much thought to—Because of our love for Gordon & Cary we would like to do anything to show them & you and the dear Dr. our appreciation of your wish to have us assure these solemn vows for them—and I know you are all too understanding to misunderstand when I say having declined others we both feel it would hurt them if we showed this discriminationI told you of Elizabeth & Olive and the President has also had to decline for various reasons several other friends—
So—you will just let us love them—and value your wish to have us—and understand why we can’t. Forgive this stupid note but I am writing late at night, as I want to send it to you by Cary tomorrow—Give Mrs Flournoy my love—
Kiss the boys for me—and with renewed appreciation and love—believe me
