The President's Cottege

My dear Boy

For now I feel I can call you that and you will understand—I have always felt you were like a son to me—and tonight my heart is very full—Not only of my own great happiness—but of the postponement of yours.

I am just as sure as I ever way was that it is only a postponement, for I know what a heart of gold that little girl has inside of what seems a bundle of inconsistencies—but the fact that I am sure of your future does not make the waiting any easier for you—and my heart yearns to really help and comfort you—

I have just read your lovely letter to her—(and I am more touched than I can express that you let me read it) and I cannot imagine a more generous or manly expression—it rings true in every line—and seems to mark the way like a great light to lead her faltering footsteps back to the straight road to happiness and the acceptance of your wonderful love—

Stand pat on what you have written and do not swerve—I could not have done it half so well even if you had asked my advice—and my heart is full of comprehension, and admiration of all your splendid fineness—and I want you to know I count you my very best friend—and will serve you when and how you need me—

I really wanted to tell you myself what Helen told you tonight—and I think the President has wanted you to know all along—but I know you understangd why we did not—I have told no one—not even Mother—and I want to talk to you and tell you all that is in my thoughts—Don’t think that because of our own happiness—either of us can forget yours. When you came up stairs tonight he said—“I love Grayson so I would give anything the see him happy.”—I have written this because we have so few chances to talk—and I want you to know I am still your champion, and you have only to test me and you will find me the same old “optimistic”—
