Dear Sir

We hope that we are not intruding in enclosing you some of our literature for we are satisfied that our Lithia Water generously drank will not only give great aid to your treatment in the cure of our noble President, but eventually if continued will make of him a well man.

This water is pleasant, refreshing and invigorating - and consitutes the greatest natural tonic known and even the most delicate stomach is quieted by its use.

As an inducement for you to try a five gallon bottle, the only way we are now shipping, we will send it to you free of charge, you paying only expressage both ways.

In making your decision in this grave matter we will call your attention to that beautiful Bible story of the prophet, the rich man, the river Jordan and a case of leprosy and we hope that you will not be a doubter as the sick man was.

Messrs. Reagan & Gilbert,
Farmville Lithia Springs

My dear Sirs:—I went to your place rather incredulous in regard to the healing properties of your waters, and supposed the laudations of its curative powers from every one I met a rather sudden ebullition which was likely to pass off when sober reality became known. My interest for you personally induced me to bring with me some of the waters of your springs, for the purpose of, in a limited way, testing their properties; and I now send you the result of my investigations. Your medical friends will tell you that the Mineral Waters of the country are classed under four heads; namely, Carbonated, Sulphuretted, Chalybeate, and Saline. The carbonated waters are impregnated with the carbonates of lime, iron, and magnesia. The Sweet Springs of this State are of this character, and the Seltzer, Spa, and the Pyrmout of Europe are of this character. Sulphuretted waters contain sulphuretted hydrogen, which gives to the water of our sulphur springs of this country that feted smell of sulphuretted hydrogen gas. The White, Red, and Salt Sulphur Springs of Virginia are of this character.

Chalybeate waters contain the carbonate of the protoxide of iron held in solution by the excess of carbonic acid. The coloring matter, a brown precipitate, which you see in the stream, is caused by carbonic acid being given off, and the protoxide, by absorbing oxygen, is precipitated as a hydrated sesquioxide, hence the acherous color. The Bedford Springs are of this character.

The saline waters contain sulphates and carbonates of lime, magnesia, and soda, and the chlorides of calcium magnesium and sodium. These are the waters in which lithia is usually found, as in the celebrated Carlsbad Springs of Germany; iodine and sometimes bromine are found in these waters. The Saratoga Springs contain small portions of iodine.

I have called your attention to the above for the purpose of saying that it amounts to a very remarkable phenomenon that your springs affords the greatest variety of these waters to be found in the world. Sulphuretted water is found at your springs in a less degree than any other. You have carbonated water to perfection. Your chalybeate water assumes an inky hue upon the addition of nitrate of silver, and a purple color by the additon of the ferrocyanuret of potassium, and yield the chloride of sodium, chloride of calcium, and the chloride of magnesium, traces of both the sulphate and carbonate of lime, a large proportion of the oxide of iron, with considerable silica.

Your Lithia Springs will be found of the saline character, with as large proportion of lithia as the Mecklenburg Water, and will prove to be as efficient, and containing very nearly the same mineral ingredients as the Carlsbad of Germany.

It is a matter of astonishment that waters so valuable should be suffered to remain unknown until now. I am convinced that scientific men will soon demonstrate to the world that you have the healing waters for many an afflicted being, who now pines in chambers, confined from business and pleasure, by disease which baffles the skill of the most learned and practical physician.

Yours truly,

W. H. Coffin, MD, and Chemist.
