Text

My dear Mr. President

I have examined William English Walling's book written in May, 1915, and entitled "The Socialists and the War" and find it a compilation of the views of other socialists of various countries. There is no editorial comment by Walling so I got from the book no idea of his attitude.

He quotes quite extensively from other American socialists and also summarizes their views. Of these I find that the ideas of Charles Edward Russell are more in accord with what I conceive to be the best suited to influence Russian socialists. Walling says of Russell:

The quotations which he gives bear out this statement, Russell saying there is no way "but to fight through to the end."
Russell

Russell, as you probably know, is 56 years old, a journalist and author, who in 1910 and again in 1912 was the Socialist candidate for Governor of New York.

I am sorry not to be able to tell you more of Walling but his book helped me not at all.

Faithfully yours,
Robert Lansing
