The President

Our people in New York appreciate the compliment paid to their loyalty and courage by the selection of our Irish Catholic regiment, the Sixty-Ninth New York, amongst the first to go to the front. I speak the mind of all then by requesting that a commanding officer who will represent that character of the appointment of Captain Haskell would be eminently satisfactory.

John Cardinal Farley,
Archbishop of New York.

Wilson, Woodrow, 1856-1924
