Provenance

Duncan G. Groner was a publisher for the Clay County Crescent in Green Cove Springs, Florida. His original gift of papers was to the University of Virginia but he desired that the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace have the correspondence related to their organization.

20 folders with the contents of each folder arranged in chronological order. Undated documents are at the back of the folders.

Biography or History

Duncan Lawrence Groner was born in Norfolk, Virginia on September 6, 1873, the son of General Virginius D. and Katherine (Campbell) Groner. He was educated at Washington and Lee University and the University of Virginia, earning the LLD degree. In 1898 he married Anne Vaughan, who died in 1930. They had three sons. In 1934 he married Marian Edwards Shouse. He practiced law in Norfolk and served as Judge of the Eastern district of Virginia by appointment of President Harding. He became Judge of the US Court of Appeals in 1931 and chief judge in 1938. He died in July of 1957.

Scope and Content

The Judge Groner Papers consists of 20 folders of correspondence relating to the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace Foundation over a ten year period, 1938-1947, when D. Lawrence Groner served on the Foundation’s board. The collection is housed in one document box with the first four folders containing original documents owned by the Birthplace. There is no restriction on their use. The last sixteen folders contain photocopies from originals owned by the University of Virginia Library whose permission must be obtained for their reproduction.
