Text

My dearest Bessie,

I am distressed to have left your sweet letter so long unanswered, especially in view of the fact that it comes to me from an Infirmary. But really it has not been my fault, dear; After being perfectly well,—all of us,—throughout the extraordinarily long hard winter, I have had constant, though not really serious illness—in the family ever since my return from Georgia, and it has been impossible to keep up with my mail. Finally I made things worse by falling and spraining my hand! I am just able to use it a little again with much pain, so please excuse this short scrawl.
I was concerned indeed to hear that you had been having first ill health and then an operation, but apparently I ought to send my congratulations as well as my sympathy, as it is to be a case of “alls well that ends well.” I hope that you can and will write me that you are perfectly restored by this time. It was good to have even stolen fleeting glimpse of your husband but I can't tell you how glad I should have been to have seen you with him.
I am going to try to get off tomorrow the long promised picture of myself,—a better one than that reproduced in the papers. It was taken at the same time,—just a year ago. I shall also send one of Jessie. I have more of the other two girls now, but you have doubtless seen those in the papers. Some very charming ones taken last Spring have been reproduced a good deal.
