Biography or History

The items in this collection were passed down through the Hoyt family through its connection with Ellen Axson Wilson. Donated by Robert Hoyt, the collection was maintained and organized by Robert’s late uncle, Dr. William D. Hoyt, Jr., cousin of Ellen Axson Wilson. Dr. Hoyt, a noted historian who once taught at Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland, worked on identifying the individuals depicted in this collection in addition to publishing his own works on Virginia area histories, most notably Valley Views: Lexington and Rockbridge County, Virginia 1924-1940 which, at one point, was sold in the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum gift shop in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Dr. William D. Hoyt, Jr. passed away in 1991 after which the collection was donated to the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum by his nephew.
