You fully appreciate that the wise selection of a food commissioner for Colorado is of the gravest importance to your department, the people of my state and to me their Governor. At your suggestion seven names considered by you either sent by me to you or submitted by you to me are entirely satisfactory Your last inquiry was as to Thomas B Stearns in your telegram of August third I was of the opinion strongly then and am now that Stearns would be one of the best selections that could be made; a most superior and successful business man, a valuable citizen with large experience and splendid relative ability, nominally a republican but never active in politics, absolutely fearless in his political and business actions. If others are being considered, of such great importance is the matter that I would appreciate right much if you will advise their names.
