Mrs. John Lyon Gardiner,
Bridge Hampton, LI

My dear Madam,

Allow me to thank you for your letter of January 11th, forwarded to me to-day by my publishers (was the date written “Jan’y” by mistake for February?). It was not really ignorance on my part that led to the misstatement you point out. I knew, of course, that Lion Gardiner built the first fort at Saybrook. He was crowded out of my sentence by a careless effort at condensation. In the book there will be room to tell the facts more exactly. I am sorry the mistake should thus have crept in.

Sincerely Yours,

Woodrow Wilson
