<p>The Captain takes great pleasure in publishing the following commendatory dispatch received by cable from the Commander Cruiser and Transport Force, together with the acknowledgment of the receipt of same:</p>
<p><strong>22 September, 1918</strong></p>
<p> “Your report of torpedoing U.S.S. Mount Vernon just received . The forces under my command deplore the loss of your gallant seamen, but we hasten to congratulate you on splendid leadership and seamanship after being struck. Conduct of Captain and crew reflects a state of discipline and efficiency most gratifying. You have added a page to the service.</p>

<li>The receipt of the cablegram from the Commander Cruiser and Transport Force, dated September 22, addressed to the U.S.S. MOUNT VERNON is herewith acknowledged.</li>
<li>The cablegram has been read to the entire crew at General Muster. The words of commendation contained in this dispatch are deeply appreciated and will inspire the Captain, Officers and Crew to increased zeal and endeavor in the performance of their duties.</li>
