The Captain takes great pleasure in publishing the following commendatory dispatch received by cable from the Commander Cruiser and Transport Force, together with the acknowledgment of the receipt of same:
22 September, 1918
“Your report of torpedoing U.S.S. Mount Vernon just received . The forces under my command deplore the loss of your gallant seamen, but we hasten to congratulate you on splendid leadership and seamanship after being struck. Conduct of Captain and crew reflects a state of discipline and efficiency most gratifying. You have added a page to the service.
