Have received tTelegram Jutly sixth from Horton Smyrna containing report of Colonel Poillon on fighting near Aidin. It is not possible at present to request Greek Army to evacuate Smyrna region, but Conference may perhaps agree to might fix a limits to Greek occupation containing relatively small area of hinterland, sufficient merely to protect Smyrna and its immediate neighborhood from attack. In order to meet possible claims here by Greek representatives based upon strategic arguments, we request you to instruct Colonel Poillon to name the places round Smyrna which he considers necessary for Army occupying Smyrna to hold. The present limit hoped for by Greece appears to be a line running north and south through Salihli up to Aivali on the north and to the south side of the Maeander Valley on the south. This appears to us a line far beyond what is needed for the strategic protection of Smyrna
