<p>Jeff. Hall.<br /><br />The House was called to order at the usual hour, President Abney in the chair. The roll was called and the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.<br /><br />The election of officers being read in order, the following gentlemen were duly elected: President, Mr. JB Adger, Jr., of SC; Vice-President, Mr. Claiborne; Treasurer, Mr. Horner. Mr. Youmans of SC was chosen monthly orator for February; and Messrs Lefevre, Gibson, and Sanders were elected Magazine editors.<br /><br />The debate was upon the question, “Was the Saracen rule in Spain conducive to the general civilization of Europe? Mr. Adger and Mr. Patterson spoke upon the Affirmative; Mr. Bryan upon the Neg. After some general debate by the House, the question was decided on in the Affirmative Negative.<br /><br />The question-committee reported three questions from which the House chose the following for discussion this night three weeks: “Has the monastic system a beneficial influence upon civilization?” For the debate of this question there were appointed,<br /><br />On the Affirmative: Messrs. Felton, Gibson, Godwin;<br /><br />On the Negative: Messrs. Geigon, A. Hampton, G. Hampton.<br /><br />The Treasurer submitted his final report, and excuses were heard.<br /><br />The President reported the appointment of Messrs. Beckwith, Patterson, and Robinson upon the committee to wait upon the Committee of Judges chosen for the prize debate, and to superintend the arrangements for that debate<br /><br />On account of Mr. Daniel's sickness his constitutional amendment was postponed for one week.<br /><br />It was moved and seconded that a committee be appointed to inquire into the condition of the Washington Society and see what is to be its action as to the appointment of editors of the Magazine. Carried. Messrs. Bruce,Camden, and Shirley were appointed on this committee.<br /><br />The classes for debate were read; the Vice-President offered his report; excuses were heard.<br /><br />Upon motion the question-committee were allowed to submit a further question A motion was then made, seconded, and carried to ratify the House's choice of question.<br /><br />The second roll was called and the House adjourned.</p>
