Your editorial on the first year of my administration gives me a feeling which it is hard for me to put into words. I think it is chiefly this, a sense of deep gratitude that I have been able to serve the country and that those who look on with the greatest disinterestedness and the most sincere interest in the welfare of the country think that I have in some degree attained the objects I have sought to accomplish. I could not let your generous editorial pass without at least this line of deep and sincere appreciation.
Faithfully yours,
