My dearest Friend

I wish with all my heart that we had know that there was even a possibility that you could come to the wedding. We would have kept a place open for you in the house as well as in our hearts. But we knew how you have felt ever since your dear one went, and how far from well you have been lately, and sadly took it for granted that you could not and would not venture upon the excitements and fatigues involved. So that now the house is to be full to overflowing. And, if you were to come and not be in the house, we could literally see nothing of you, because of our necessary absorption in our houseful. We are deeply grieved to have missed the chance even, as apparently we have.
I am sure you understand why we have not written oftener. We are living amidst distractions such as I never dreamed of. As for myself I did not know that a man could live under such pressure of tasks and responsibilities as I am staggering under. I can think of my friends, thank God, and be refreshed by the thought of them, and my affection for them keeps green and constant, but I am in despair about writing regularly. Last Sunday, for example, I spent the whole day at the dentist’s, - simply because there was literally no other time I could go, or think of my own personal or bodily needs at all. Fortunately the friends we love undersand, - understand everything and every word.

All join me in affectionate messages.

Your devoted friend
Woodrow Wilson
