I am in receipt of your letter in regard to President Droppers. I think it is all right to give Professor Droppers until next June to accept the appointment to Greece, but as Minister Schurman has already returned and there is a vacancy there, I think you had better appoint some one to hold the office temporarily. You will have no difficulty in finding some one, because it would be an honor that would be appreciated by many. We have so many deserving Democrats and so few places to give that I would like if all of them would be willing to serve for a short time so that we could pass the offices around. Have you any one in mind for this place during the short term intervening between now and June? Have you thought anything more about George Fred Williams?¹ He might be willing to accept this short term as a compliment; at least, it would do no harm to offer it to him even if he declined it, provided you think he would be a proper person for the place and provided also you have no one else whom you prefer to him. If you do not approve of the suggestion in regard to George Fred Williams, would you like to have me look about for a good Democrat who would like a winter’s stay in Greece?
With assurances of respect, etc., I am, my dear Mr. President,Very sincerely yours,
WJ Bryan
