Mr. Dantin, the Embassy counsel, is with me. He has completed translation. Every point contended for in the last note is accepted in fact, though not in form. From a diplomatic standpoint the mission is a success, and the press should be cautioned to discuss the subject with care. The Mexican people are very sensitive. I assume that I may be directed to return to Mexico City. I have already rerequested Burnside to be prepared to advise me as to the character of the revolutionary forces that should be considered as entitled to our good offices in considering measures for the cessation of hostilities. Some good man or men should (#) that in the north. The lesson of non-recognition is our weapon it can be wielded effectively in the north, I believe. The real work commences now. I cannot prophesy success but the possibility of it is worth our best efforts.
