President Woodrow Wilson,
The White House,
Washington, DC.
Dear Mr. President:
I was just on the point of writing to you when your very kind letter of April fifth came to hand this morning.
I sympathize with you most profoundly in your efforts to secure the best men for important positions, and, regarding China, have been wondering whether you have thought of Prof. Jenks. I have seen quite a little of him lately and am very much impressed by his great knowledge of China and his high character and ability. He was intensely interested in our effort to secure Mr. Mott, and is strongly impressed with the feeling that it is necessary to infuse a little righteousness into the minds of the Chinese leaders. Moreover, the question there, for some little time, will be largely a financial and economic one, and his knowledge of the situation would help him very much.
I am going on to Washington next week Thursday, the 17th, to attend a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Carnegie Institution Thursday afternoon and a meeting of the Trustees of the Peace Foundation Friday morning. I shall be alone and hope sincerely that it will be possible for me to see you and the family, if only for a few minutes. I have no axe to grind but simply want to grip your hand and tell you how deeply interested I am in all that you are doing.
