Text

My Dear Mr. President

I have, in accordance with your suggestion, written Gov Lister of Washington in regard to the proposed land law discriminating against the Japanese (I enclose a copy). Gov Lister is a Democrat & will I doubt not go as [far] as local conditions will permit in carrying out your suggestions. I am also writing State Senator Caminetti at Sacramento along the same line, but as the Gov of California is a Roosevelt Republican I think you had better ask Senator Works of Cal to come to the White House & you can lay the matter before him verbally. As we have two Democratic Senators from Oregon would it not be well for you to writesee them and lay the matter before them. It is better than writing. The interest of the Pacific coast in the Exhibit at San Francisco ought to lead them to avoid any that disturb our amicable relations with Japan. This may require early action. With assurances of esteem etc I am my dearMr President
