To: Navintel

8862. Following message received from British C in O, Mediterranean, addressed Governor Malta (period) First message- quote- Italian portion inhabitants Pola have taken possession of entire fleet now assembled in fortified harbor of Pola (period) From this moment we consider ourselves as companions of those fighting for the cause of justice and liberty of the people and we should esteem our happiness to be able to salute from the bottom of our hearts arrival at Pola as soon as possible of one of the Naval Division of the United States or some powerful ally which is not interested in local national questions (period) The National Committee of Pola has selected Dr. Louvre Scalier as President and Captain de Frigatte Koch as Chief National Defender- unquote. Second message- quote- A further telegram to President of United States and to all champions of national liberty (period) At midnight October 30th and October 31st the National Committee of Jugo-Slavs after independently breaking the oppressive chains of centuries and answering call of officers and soldiers inspired with the sublime ideas of President Wilson, in agreeing with Italian portion inhabitants of Pola, took possession (parenthesis) As stated in first message. On October 28th the Jugo-Slav National Council instituted a provisional government (period) This same government on October 31st took possession of entire Austrian Fleet at present assembled in fortified port of Pola (period) Existence of the fleet is in danger (period) To-day Italians destroyed the Unitis and Wien (period) In order to preserve fleet for Jugo-Slav nation I beg you to take us under the protection of your fleet or a fleet which may be in the vicinity of Pola and which belongs to a power which is not interested in local national questions (period) I beg for information or instructions by wire for Chiefs.
