My dear Anna-Marie,
Many thanks for your letter which I received this morning. I hope Rhoda and Paul are now quite well again and I am glad to hear that things are satisfactory up at the Lake.
I was down at the club on the 4th and had a great time. Reached the club at 9:—am.; rowed to Staten Island for dinner; then some tennis at the club & supper. Left again at 4:30 a.m. the next morning.
Franz was up here to see me last Saturday. He arrived in the afternoon, had supper with us and slept in my tent. At 4:30 am Sunday started for Yonkers in the Ford Auto—a 15 mile trip each way. The ride was great along the Hudson and I’m getting to be quite a chauffeur. I got back to the barracks before anyone was up.
Here everything is about the same. The weather has been rotten the last few days, mostly rain. Yesterday about 12 men of our company were pretty sick and they are getting better now by degrees. I guess it was rotten pork which we had Sunday & Monday. Although I ate my portion, I’ve had no bad effects.
AI had a session with our Army Dentist this afternoon; had a tooth filled with silver and all teeth thoroughly cleaned. He did good work at no charge!
Well, it seems now as though I will probably get a five days furlough from July 21st to 25th and I guess I can extend this to the 26th by getting a pass for that day. I’m making my application to-day and guess it will go through all right unless we get general orders to leave Pleasantville. I expect to leave here at 5: oclock p.m., July 20th , and take the Albany night boat from 125th Street at 6:30pm. Will reach Lake George at about 10:20 am. July 21st and guess there is a boat leaving for Bolton at that time? Will let you know more definitely as soon as I get advise from Headquarters. Is there a chance of hiring a good row boat for these days?
With love to all,
Otto
P.S. Will be in the city July 15th (Sunday) to arrange for tickets if furlough is OK.
