HON. James L. Wilmeth, Director,
Bureau of Engraving,
Washington, D. C.
My dear Mr. Wilmeth:-
I am writing you at the suggestion of a distinguished statesman of Missouri, who is deeply interested in the welfare of my race. We have, in that state, a great many dependable Negroes, real assets to the commonwealth — men and women who have labored in sunshine and in rain to educate their children and fit them for the responsibilities of citizen-ship and life. Many of their children are a credit to their parents and I would be pleased if you could see your way clear to give some of them employment in your department, since our state has no representation (Negro) in Washington.
Thanking you in advance, I am,
Yours respectfully,
J. Silas Harris
