FRIDAY.
The President conferred with Hugh Wallace, the newly appointed Ambassador to France, and was host at luncheon to the members of the Democratic National Committee, who had met in Washington for the purpose of reorganizing and electing Homer Cummings of Connecticut chairman in succession to Vance McCormick, resigned. This was a very crowded day and the President worked hard until about five o’clock, when he and Mrs. Wilson left the White House and went for a brisk walk through the downtown section of Washington. He was recognized and cheered by many of the pedestrians, traffic finally becoming so congested that it became necessary for the police reserves to clear the sidewalks. The President remained at his desk until nearly midnight.
