WEDNESDAY.
The President today held the first Cabinet meeting since his illness. The meeting was held at 10:00 o’clock in the White House Study. The President enjoyed meeting the various members of the Cabinet and talking with them. I suggested beforehand that the meeting last only an hour to prevent him from overtaxing himself, and that I come in at the end of an hour. This would be the signal for the adjournment of the meeting. When I entered the room according to our pre-arranged plan, he shook his head to me, meaning that I should not interrupt them. At the end of an hour and fifteen minutes I again entered the room, with the same result. At 11:30 I returned with Mrs. Wilson, and the President reluctantly adjourned the meeting. The President showed very plainly that the meeting had done him a lot of good. When I asked him if he wanted to give anything to the press about the Cabinet meeting, he said: “No, I do not believe so.” I said: “Won’t some of the Cabinet members give out what transpired?” He replied: “I do not know. I doubt if they will.” He then added: “Lane was the leak of the Cabinet when he was a member.”
