Text

The President seemed much distressed and pained to write the letter to the NEW YORK TIMES about the Tumulty incident, but he said it was a question of personal privilege; that he could not let it go unanswered. He felt that it had to be answered through the papers to correct the wrong impression which had been given out through the papers. He said that he hated to do this to Tumulty, but if it had been his son he would have had to act in the same manner.
