Text

Sunday night, April 30th, Lady Astor had an engagement to see Mr. Wilson. The hour had been fixed at six o’clock. Lady Astor, however, had been to Mt. Vernon, was delayed on the trip, and did not reach S Street until seven o’clock. Mr. Wilson shortly before that time, assuming that she was unable to meet her engagement with him, went to his room and retired. When Lady Astor was informed of this, she said she would go right up to his bed room to see him. She and Mrs. Wilson thereupojn went to the President’s room, the latter rapping on the door to awaken the former President.

A few days after Lady Astor called I asked President Wilson what his impression of her was. He replied: “She is a remarkabley clever lady and I enjoyed her visit. She did fine work in stirring up enthusiasm throughout the country in behalf of the League of Nations.”
