My dearest one,

Last night I dined with Hugh and Madame Wallace. It was a big formal dinner and a very fine affair. They made an excellent showing, and I think, so far, he is making a good Ambassador. Among the guests were—the Lansings, Houses; Jusserands, BMB and all the others were either French or foreigners—The Wallaces are always sweet about you.

To-day, I am spending a quiet day home. The President and Mrs. W. have gone for a long motor ride alone. They are always so fine about asking me to go along—but this is the first time I have declined. They are so kind and dear to me. I love them more than ever, if such, be possible. This is a big day at The Race course at Longchamp which is about ten minutes motor ride from here. I am too good an Episcopalian to go to the races on Sunday, although, it is quite the thing here. Frankly, I do not enthuse very much over the races here. The steeple chase course is a feeble attempt. Little baby jumps. The kind I used to play over as a little boy riding a broom handle for a stick horse. I never saw such large crowds as go to the races here.

To-day—Sunday— Col & Mrs. House are occupying the box of the President of the French Republic at the races. A long jump from the customs and religion of Austin, Texas. Mrs. House is strong for all social events “and all that sort of thing”. So is the dear old Colonel, “Gay Paree” is to his liking

—Monday, 12th
The pictures of you and the boys have just arrived. You cannot imagine how glad I am to get them and how happy they make me feel. They are perfectly splendid. You could not have pleased me more, you dear darling precious little girl.

I am greatly pleased with the looks of the young fellow. I love him very dearly. Gordon is a grand looking fellow and appears in such “tip top” shape. I know that Margaret is near by, I can see it on her in Gordon’s expression. These fine pictures make me more homesick than ever. The pictures are all dear of you—precious, I love them. Every one admires the pictures of all the family. The President and Miss. E. enthused greatly over them. I am hurrying to catch the pouch which leaves in a minute—With all my love and a many thanks for the pictures and your dear letter.
