Dear Friend Grayson

I had your telegram and wired at once that I should be glad to serve, on the board or committee you mention; I am as interested as ever in anything that concerns Woodrow Wilson.

I am dreadfully sorry to hear of your illness: but I can wholly sympathize with you, since I am myself down on my back here in the hospital. No one who has not gone through it, knows what this sort of thing means to a man who loves his work, and loves to go on with it. If it is a discipline to one’s character, and I think it is, it plays not with his plans!

I intended when in Washington in April, on my way north, to drop in & see you. I wanted to get your advice regarding a doctor; but when I saw the vast responsibility you were under, in connection with floods & storms, I simply had not the heart to add another thing to your burdens. In February I found I had a fibrous enlargement of the prostate gland, causing great pain & discomfort. I found a good doctor here, a surgeon of long experience, and he operated last Monday—an electric resection. I came through without complications and am promised relief that may be permanent. I devoutly hope so!

All these things complicate and delay my work on the biography of Woodrow Wilsons. Sometimes I grow much discouraged,—and I think Mrs. Wilson would be even more so!—but what can one do?I shall be at home again this next week and hope soon to be as good as new.

With many & warm regards, and the hope that you may soon, also, be yourself again.

Sincerely

Ray Stannard Baker
