Dear Friend

Your son Cary and William Jackson were here yesterday. We were mighty glad to have them but were sorry they could not stay longer and soak in a little more of the spirit of the place. I took them up to call on President King and he asked one of the students, a member of Alpha Delta Phi, to show them around.

I hope they liked what they saw. I myself believe that there is no better small college in America, and I believe also in a small college as against the great university, for the undergraduate. I think that in the small college there is likely to be a better understanding of the individual capacities and requirements of the boy -- before he himself knows exactly what he wants to do. I have known of so many instances, as you have also, probably, of boys who have come to themselves through their intimate contacts, not with instructors, but with experienced teachers, of whom they make a great point here at Amherst. At the conclusion of such a course as they give here in Amherst, a boy is likely to know pretty well what he wants to do, and can then finish off at one of the great universities.

I believe also in the special emphasis paid here at Amherst to two aspects of education which seem to me of primary importance, that is, to English language and literature, and to science.

I was in Washington a few weeks ago and would have called you up, but just didn’t have the heart, knowing the tremendous burden that you have been under in connection with the calamities that have been cursing the earth.

If ever you and Mrs. Grayson get up into this part of the country, I wish you would come to see us and incidentally look over the college.

With warmest regards, I am

Cordially yours,

Ray Stannard Baker
