Text

Dear Gordon and Cary:

When I was a boy not older than you are I heard about Dick Whittington and his Cat, and Jack the Giant Killer. It used to be cold and snowy in the evenings where I lived and I would sit beside the big, glowing coal-stove—for we lived in the country—and with a book on my knees look at the pictures of the terrible big giants, and of Dick Whittington and of the Cat. I was mighty interested, I can tell you, and was forever trying to get my father or my aunt or the cook or anybody to read me all about them.

So I thought I would send you boys those stories for Christmas—and the pictures too—and I hope you enjoy them as much as I did

Your friend,

Ray Stannard Baker
