Dear Admiral

I am sorry we could not do anything for my friend Midshipman Stephen Gerard Lawrence, but I am deeply grateful for your kind efforts in his behalf. It was nice of you to wire me and write me as you did.

I have just left BM, who is at the Waldorf Towers. He is not at all well, having come down with an acute follicular tonsillitis and a bad attack of what he calls gout in both big toes and the ankle joints. I saw him with Dr. Brown and an allergy specialist, and I am convinced that Bernie does not have real gout but is suffering from absorption from some source of infection very much the same as Harty had.

You may recall that, thanks to your good offices, Harty was very well handled at Johns Hopkins, and after being immunized with a vaccine prepared from the prostate secretion he has had no further joint trouble. I am extremely hopeful that a vaccine prepared from Bernie’s throat culture, (which frequently accompanies his joint inflammation,) will be helpful, if not curative.

I would like very much to have your reaction to this as you know Bernie so well and I know your regard for him.

With renewed assurances of my esteem and regard, I remain,

Yours faithfully,

Herman B Baruch
