Text

My dear Admiral

I am glad that you are back on American soil and I congratulate you upon having the opportunity to be so near to the making of history, for three months.

I have put in all of my leisure hours in the last three months, in writing editorials for the Charleston daily Gazette and upholding and sustaining the President in his great fight. I have been tempted to write him and congratulate him, but he is too busy now to be bothered with anything but the work immediately in hand. It is perfectly wonderful the way he has handled himself and upon him and his success, depends the future of the democratic party, but greater still, the future of this country and democracy in general.

I hope I shall be able to see you during the summer months and if you come around in this section, please let me know. With my best wishes to Mrs. Grayson and to Gordon, I am

Cordially yours,

WE Chilton
