My dear Grayson

The enclosed, which seems to cover a statement of Senator Hitchcock’s regarding the health of the President, is, I trust not so severe as to be classed a breakdown.

The sentiment and feeling expressed in the enclosed clipping creates a feeling of hope in the heart of most every American who is untainted by party selfishness, that it may come to pass that the President will allow the San Francisco Convention to make him the Nation’s candidate, and thereby prove that all Republics are not ungrateful. The great patriot M. Clemenceau would disagree, however, his case was very different.

We need Mr Wilson’s leadership continued, and it is the hope and desire of all right thinking people, who have a democratic conscience and hearts to appreciate great service, that Mr Wilson may not be unwilling to give a grateful people a chance to show their appreciation.

Is it asking too much to hope for a word of encouragement from you, in strict confidence? I feel hopeful that the President has regained his health. Stumping the country could be dispensed with by his declaration, establishing a precedent that would serve a great and good purpose in the future. In my opinion this would spread confusion among the selfish who are bellowing over the land at the present time.

The attitude taken by the people of Missouri toward Senator Reed, is an index of the feeling expressed very freely throughout the South-West as I have observed.

With kind personal regards and all best wishes, I am,

Very respectfully,

AB Butler
