My dearest one,

The Queen of Roumania with her two daughters, sister, lady-in-waiting and a General from the army lunched here to-day. The Queen seemed a quite different person from her appearance and manners of yesterday. She is brilliant and very handsome. Her daughters are about seventeen and eighteen years of age—fat and slow and dull in conversation. The Queen’s sister is very bright and would be attractive looking if she were properly dressed. She had on a skirt that was hardly below her knees. It looked like a short bathing skirt.

I am glad that I got your dress before the Parisian dresses became so extreme—low in the back and high around the knees. This morning I went for a walk, and I met a damsel with cherry red lips painted—and red firey red tongues in her slippers to match her artificial red lips. Evidently something new in make ups.

These are hardest days on the President yet. The situation is full of complications—He is occupied every hour. But, I feel confident that he is going to come all right in the End, with a Peace that will be just and fair to all.

From present indications I think we will be homeward bound before the middle of May. I am awfully anxious to get back to be with you and the boys. I love you truly—my precious one—Good night—
