Dearest

This morning I had a nice visit from the Belgian Minister—M. Cartier. He asked especially for you. He wanted to talk over plans relative to the President’s proposed visit to Brussels.

I had lunch at the Ritz hotel with my old friend Frank H. Hitchcock. We were alone—He was most interesting. Telling me many incidents concerning the Hon. Charles E. Hughes’ campaign. How he changed after the nomination & how he fell from the pedestal they all thought he was perched on; that he was cold as a fish—over-rated etc. Then he told me about the great error the Republicans were making now concerning their actions towards the League of Nations—politically they were in the mire— poor leader-ship—narrow partisanship—jealousy—envy—intense hatred of the the idea seing the President make a big name in history.

He believes in country first regardless of party politics. He is strong for the League of Nations. All Americans should back their President in an inter-national affair where America hasd such a grand opportunity to help the world—make a great name in history—but his party had shown poor patriotism—narrowness—that it was a blessing Hughes’ was defeated—
