Text

Dearest,

Captain Gilmore and I arrived safely this morning, after a very pleasant motor trip over the good roads of the Maryland in the fine morning air. It took us two hours and thirty minutes to make the trip which is the fastest I have ever done or intended doing this morning. Never more than forty miles, but kept a steady gait pace of 35.

I found Davis and a colored woman hard at work at 1600—Everything seemed in good shape as result of the summer vacation. I go there to spend the night which will be very lonesome without you & the boys.

I greatly enjoyed the brief visit with you dear ones, and, as usual, hated to depart. Suffered no more pains in my equitorial region—It is quite warm here to-day—a marked contrast from Blue Ridge this A.M. Please convey my greetings to your two nice relatives and love and sincerist affection to my darling little girl and the three big fat boys,
