My dear Mr. Tumulty
Part of the propaganda to discredit the administration takes the form of implying that President Wilson health is of such a precarious condition that he is unable to attend to his daily duties.
If compatible with your sense of duty I would be pleased to have you give me such facts as you deem proper — that I may counter-act the influence of the President’s Critics. I am glad that the President has insisted on the acceptance of the treaty as it came from the congress of men most familiar with the facts on which the treaty is based. There should be no compromises with evil minded men. The dog-in-the-manger policy of Sen. Lodge is but the result of the envy of men who saw the President set high the standard of duty.—You will understand that nothing you may say will be mentioned but with your consent.
With personal respect and pride in your untarnished record I remain
Yours truly
