My dear Admiral

I was very happy to receive your cordial little note of March sixth, enclosing Latane’s “From Isolation to Leadership”. I am already deep into this admirable book, and appreciate very much the interest of the President in asking you to send it to me.

All of us who love the President read with such thrill the news of every step back to full recovery. We were all so happy with the account of his motor ride the other day. I don’t believe you know how strong the confidence of the country is in you, and how grateful it is for your vigilant and unceasing care of the President.

Your kind words about my appointment are among the pleasantest that I have received. I have always felt that you are my staunch friend, my dear Admiral, and I only hope that you regard me as such, also.

With kindest regards,

Yours very sincerely,

Bainbridge Colby
