Text
Dear Cary
I thank you very much for your letter which reached me just before I left London. I am sailing in a few minutes on the MOUNT VERNON for Washington. I wish very much it would have been possible for me to be present when the treaty was signed but I have already over-stayed my time and must hasten back to Washington. I appreciate more than I can tell you your letter and your kindness.
I note what you say with reference to Mr. Irving. I will take the matter up when I reach Washington and do what I can for this, so deserving an officer.
I am writing a letter to the President by this mail urging him to give a little time to visit Pontanezen at Brest upon his return to the United States. Somehow the impression has prevailed here that he is coming and I hope he will do so. It will delight not only the soldiers here but the men of the Army and Marine Corps. Call it to the attention of the President before he leaves Paris.
My wife joins me in warm regards and hope to see you at home soon.
Sincerely yours,
Josephus Daniels
