Text

Sunday.

Went to church this morning with the President & Mrs. W. The entire crew and officers and guests were present. Everything is moving along fine: and all are becoming agreeably acquainted. The three newspaper fellows are fine gentlemen and extremely well informed men. They represent the Associated Press, The International News & the United News. Captain McCauley of the ship is making a good impression.

I am accomplishing considerable reading. Last night I finished with Americans Past and Present and frequently run over bits of French alone. All the teachers are sea sick except Miss Benham and she is busy with other duties.

I am keeping a full diary and I have some fine material on the Peace Conference already. I am sure you will enjoy reading it and it will be most precious and valuable in the future. The President and I frequently walk the decks and he is filling me with ideas and facts the world would like to know just now. He is truly great and noble. Miss E. is like her old self and most charming and gracious and true.

Monday.

We are due to sight the Azores in the morning. To-day the escort destroyers that were sent out from France joined us and gave an exhibition in dropping depth bombs.

I think that you would agree that I am making myself useful to the President on this trip already in many and varied ways.

Last night the President shook hands with all the sailors—about a thousand. He is at his best these days—Cold well, I’m thankful to say.
