Text

Wednesday.

Dearest,

Miss Edith is still confined to bed but she is making progress daily. She has certainly had a painful time of it, but she is fortunate not to have had a more serious outcome. She is brave and can stand lots of pain without complaint. The world will never know what a noble role she has played in taking care of the Great man of the whole world.

The critics are surely having a big time these days—but when the truth is known they will fade away as the fog before the noon-day sun. In the meanwhile, there will be no end of criticism and harsh cruel words—such is the lot that must be borne—unjust as it seems to those who know him intimately—by a man of history as the President is sure to be. It is hard to keep cool under so many unjust attacks of the politicians—who is thinking only of self and party and the present with no vision or thought of the future. Perhaps, they are incapable of seeing further, and will be sorry to-morrow, although many of them will never admit it. The atmosphere is loaded with dynamite these days but let us hope and pray it will not explode.
