Dear Mr. Waggoner: -

I had planned to leave here next week to be with you at your race meeting, but I regret exceedingly to tell you now that I cannot do so on account of a streptococcus infection which has developed in my throat, and which, to say the least, gives me considerable annoyance. My wife and my doctor are opposed to my going away at this time, and while I am terribly disappointed, I see that it is simply a situation where I think it is wise to obey orders.

I am negotiating for the best stallion in Europe for you, and if I can get assurance that they mean business and they will give me a reasonable price, I will communicate with you.

Concerning the letter that your secretary forwarded to me about Dr. Lamb of Washington, after careful investigation, I cannot recommend him for the operation mentioned for yourself. However, if you need anyone in that line about the eye, I would suggest my good friend, Dr. WH Wilmer, who is now in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins. He is one of the best in the world in that work as your own good Dr. Johnson will agree. He restored Earl Gray’s eyesight when everybody in Europe said it couldnt be done. At that time the Earl was the British Ambassador in this country.

I would love to be of any assistance possible to you, and if you need anything in the above line, I hope you and Dr. Johnson will come this way and talk the matter over. You understand, of course, that my desire is prompted solely from motives of friendship and my cooperation with Dr. Johnson would be on that basis.

Again regretting that I cannot be with you, and with warm personal regards, believe me always

Your sincere friend,

Cary T. Grayson
