Rear Admiral Cary Grayson: USN
Washington, DC

My dear Cary

I think the last time I saw you was when you came up to join Dr. Rixey at our home in Warrenton in the year or . Its a long way back- and I suppose you only have a faint recollection of the kid I then was?

I have held my post here as Vice Consul since , not wishing to leave Bordeaux on account of my wife’s interests, which required no little attention after the death of M. De Lamothe, my wife’s father.

On account of my desire to remain in Bordeaux and of interests that I held there, the Department of State would not let me continue in active service at that post. This decision caused me much preoccupation and annoyance as I am very fond of my work.

I have informed the Department that I would be willing to leave Bordeaux and go to some other post in France, if permitted to take up again my duties as Vice Consul, from which position I have never resigned. In fact I have passed my examinations and am on the eligible list for promotion to a full Consular billet.

The American Consul, Mr. Jaeckel, has endorsed me for a change of post, preferably in France. I enclose copy of his letter.

As the matter is now before the Department, might I ask you to help me a little bit- or rather a great deal- by sending a line to the Secretary of State commending me to his consideration in the matter of a change of post. It would mean much to me, if you can see your way clear to assist me. My work was congenial, and I want to keep at it.

Thank you a thousand times, my dear Cary, and with kind regards,

Cordially and sincerely yours,

John Douglas Wise
(US Vice Consul)

[Handwritten note]:

Dear Davis,

Please look into this and do what you can. I am interested as he comes from near Culpeper.

Yours,

Grayson
