New York -
on the train

Dear little girl

You will never know all the real happiness you bring into my life—or how much I miss you when our good times together are over—

I have had the most wonderful time and I am going back to try to, in a sense, begin things over again—Literally to renounce things I love, and some times long for—and devote my wonderful self to what seems more worthy—

Not to be only a looker-on—but to go down to work in the vineyard—

To this end you are always a stimulous, and when I find my courage failing I will reach out for your cool, capable hand to brace me up—

We are now going through the tunnel—so please if the above sounds a bit wild—put it down to the effort to divert my thoughts—There we are through—& my ears are about to burst—More later—

7–45

We are now nearly to Baltimore—& I am just back from a solitary dinner—and thinking of you & Miss Harsey in the Woolcott Dining room feasting with Miss Evans—I so hope you will have a good time—but please miss me some—I am feeling pretty lonely—We are already over a half hour late so don’t know when we will reach Wash—I have finished my book already—so hope to get a “Star” in Baltimore that will shine until I reach home—There are mostly men on the train, but none as charming as the one who glorifies 46th Street—

Do hope you met Miss Harsey without any adventures—please give her my love & tell her I will try to console her friend in Wash—until she comes—

Write me a line if you have a chance—but don’t if you are busy—
