‘MATCHES PRESIDENT’
WITH $6,000 DONATION

________

Henry Morgenthau Says Election
“Is Not a True Test of Wilson’s Worth.”

________

The “Match-the-President” fund launched last week by Chairman George White of the Democratic National Committee, with the hope that 1,000 admirers of the League of Nations would duplicate the contribution of $500 made by President Wilson to the Democratic campaign fund, took a jump upward yesterday, when it was swelled by $6,500.

Henry Morgenthau, former Ambassador to Turkey and an ardent believer in the League of Nations as a preventative of future wars, not only matched the President himself, but also for each of his eleven grandchildren, sending Chairman White a check for $6,000. Dr. Elmer A. Sheets of Yonkers also contributed $500. Mr. Morgenthau’s contribution was accompanied by the following letter:

“The League Thousand Club should arouse the right-thinking people of America to their opportunity not only to encourage Cox and Roosevelt in their noble fight, but to show their approval of the wonderful achievements and their sympathy for the pathetic sufferings of the greatest man of our day.

“This election is not a true test of Wilson’s worth—other issues are involved. The slanderers have done their work too well. The poisonous arrows shot into him almost hide the inspiring stature, which, to future generations, will appear in all its grandeur as embodying the spirit of the nation during its period of unparalleled achievement.

“Joining the League Thousand Club is a practical demonstration of the member’s unequivocal approval of Wilson and all that the League stands for.

“Let us build the monument while Wilson lives and can enjoy the encouragement that it will provide.

“As I feel that our children will benefit as much, and probably more than we, through the establishment of international justice and the diminution of bloody wars, I am inclosing my check for $6,000 for twelve places on the ‘roll of honor’—one for myself and eleven for my grandchildren, Henry M., Mortimer J., Jr., and Theresa Fox: Josephine, Barbara and Anne Wertheim; Henry Morgenthau, 3d, and Robert M. Morgenthau; Virginia, George W., Jr., and Philip Naumburg.

“Please send each grandchild a separate receipt to be ertasured as a valued memento.”

Edmond H. Moore of Ohio, who was largely responsible for Governor Cox getting the nominatin at San Francisco; Secretary of War Baker and Secretary of State Colby called upon Chairman White yesterday. Mr. Moore declined to hazard a guess at this time as to how Ohio would go, while Mr. Baker and Mr. Colby discussed speaking dates with Senator Pat Harrison, in charge of the speakers’ bureau.
