Cary T. Grayson Papers
Description
An account of the resource
The papers of Cary T. Grayson, personal physician and friend of Woodrow Wilson, came to the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library in 2005, initially as a loan. They were formally donated to the WWPL by the Grayson family in Dec. 2008. Additional gifts of papers were made by the Grayson family in succeeding years, which were eventually incorporated into the larger collection.
Compiled over Dr. Grayson’s colorful life, the collection covers every aspect of Grayson’s military service, career, family life, and personal interests. It is arranged in 13 series (listed below), many with their own finding aids. The largest series, Correspondence (40 linear feet), includes letters and other documents from thousands of individuals. It is clear that Dr. Grayson realized that he had a unique window on the historical events of his era, and he kept everything from seating charts and menus of state dinners to newspaper clippings and family calendars. He wrote diary entries while in Europe with President Wilson for the Paris Peace Conference and scribbled notes after the President was stricken with a stroke in 1919. The bulk of the papers date from 1907-1938, but the collection includes documents from as early as 1864 and as late as 2008.

THE COLLAPSE AND AWAKENING OF GERMANY IN SEVEN MONTHS.<br />________________<br /><br />How was that possible?<br />
<p>The Militarism-made and Kaiser-made Germans had crushed a few neighbor nations and drew wealth and war taxes from them. Among these was Great Russia. The war strength of the German Empire and the Teutonic powers had apparently grown since the declaration of war, considerably more than had the <sic corr="strength">strenght</sic> of the Allied Nations, except for the entrance of the <place reg="United States of America" rend="inherit" link-pointer-type="place">United States of America</place> into the ranks of the Allied forces.<br /><br /><space dim="vertical" extent="1" units="em"></space><space dim="horizontal" extent="7" units="em"></space>This was the situation when the German great drive on <place reg="Paris, France" rend="inherit" link-pointer-type="place">Paris</place> was opened last spring. Without <place reg="United States of America" rend="inherit" link-pointer-type="place">America</place> taking a vigorous hand the already upperhanded Teutons would probably, doubtless – been victors. And yet our <place reg="United States of America" rend="inherit" link-pointer-type="place">United States</place> did not have a great number of soldiers in France last Spring or foresummer as compared with the number of soldiers the other great nations had there. The <person refurl="x4000584" reg="Wilhelm II" link-pointer-type="person">Kaiser</person> and his <sic corr="hordes">hords</sic> did not fear the Yankees then because <place reg="United States of America" rend="inherit" link-pointer-type="place">America </place>could not be changed into a military power over night, as the enemy thought and the U boats would sink their ships.<br /><br /><space dim="vertical" extent="1" units="em"></space><space dim="horizontal" extent="7" units="em"></space>The Yankees were not many on the battle fronts but where they were, were looked upon as superier men with the goods with them. They were asked for by England, France, and Italy, not so much because of their immediate great numbers as because wherever they were the army vitality would rise automatically and offset the hard pressing German, Fritzie. This is clear, and if the German and Teuton morale and cause of fighting had not sunk, the war might have been kept up for years.<space dim="vertical" extent="1" units="em"></space><space dim="horizontal" extent="7" units="em"></space>The <person refurl="x4000584" reg="Wilhelm II" link-pointer-type="person">Kaiser</person> and his advisers doubt<del status="unremarkable">I</del><add>l</add>essly saw this, but they were powerless before the <abbr expan="United States of America">U. The <person refurl="x4000584" reg="Wilhelm II" link-pointer-type="person">Kaiser</person>‘s soldiers were trained <sic corr="thoroughly">thoroughly</sic> as military science can do it, but America’s sons are greater than physical man. Most everybody here knows what the American mill will do and the Yankees grow wonderfully big, bold and intelligent in front of any army on earth, I believe. <space dim="vertical" extent="1" units="em"></space><space dim="horizontal" extent="7" units="em"></space>Why is this? It is because for c<sic corr="centuries">enturies</sic> our great rich free land, the new world, has been looked towards by all other people as a Canaan. Their best smiles, most sacred tears have gone with their best sons and daughters when they come here to make their home and independent future. The American vitality beats the best and nothing can withstand it.<br /><br /><space dim="vertical" extent="1" units="em"></space><space dim="horizontal" extent="7" units="em"></space>Shortly after the return of the<person refurl="x4008059" reg="Henry J. This, it must not be forgotten, added greatly to the wonderful controlling crushing and awakening powers of our brave soldiers.<space dim="vertical" extent="1" units="em"></space><space dim="horizontal" extent="7" units="em"></space>Lastly, I want to tell you that ever since the bold German spring drive on <place reg="Paris, France" rend="inherit" link-pointer-type="place">Paris</place>, last Spring, I have been doing my bit for our great cause and for my country, as have others. We all became greatly alarmed last spring when the Germans sprang on us the super gun bombarding <place reg="Paris, France" rend="inherit" link-pointer-type="place">Paris</place>, its aircraft harassing England, and the staunch German soldiers more vigorously than ever pushing on <place reg="Paris, France" rend="inherit" link-pointer-type="place">Paris</place>, throwing back great English and French strength; We did not feel sure what would come next as a surprise. I personally lost no time to do my bit. I have in all my life since my <sic corr="schooldays">shcooldays</sic> not lifted my hand against any man and have refrained from thinking evil against anybody, but the I decided to put in what powers I possessed, in a way that would shed no blood, to whip the Teutons,- particularly German Barbarism. I am and have been for years, a foremost scientist on “Vital Forces” (Occult Powers), and this was the strongest weapon I could swing. I wrote a letter to <person refurl="x4000418" reg="Woodrow Wilson" link-pointer-type="person">the President</person> as follows and forwarded a copy to Secretaries <person refurl="x4005046" reg="Josephus Daniels" link-pointer-type="person">Josephus Daniels</person> and <person refurl="x4000737" reg="Newton D.
