Text
MONDAY, The President attended the conference at the Quai D'Orsay in the morning. At noon he and I went to the French chamber for luncheon. This was an elaborate affair of two hundred guests. The President's speech pleased the French more than any of his speeches since his arrival in France. (See speeches). The President of the French Senate following the President's speech, when asked how he liked it said,
"It was simple, sincere and grand."
Much to the President's disappointment the Peace Conference had adjourned business for the afternoon on account of the luncheon, thereby wasting time which he had expected to put in dealing with the great problems under discussion. As a result the President lost the afternoon. The other delegates have a tendency to procrastinate; he, alone, seems anxious to push the business thru.
