Text

Dear Governor

I take pleasure in calling your attention to these two editorials on the negro question, one from the New York Sun and the other from the New York Evening Post.

I think you ought to make a statement in the form of a reply to these resolutions, expressing your feeling of deep disapproval of the terrible things that have been happening in East St. Louis and elsewhere, evidencing a disregard not only of fundamental rights of the citizenship of these unfortunate people but a disregard of the principles of humanity. "America cannot countenance these things without advertising to the world the fact that she is not a sincere believer in the principles of democracy. Every agency of the Federal government will be used to prevent a recurrence of these terrible happenings."The President.

Sincerely yours, Tumulty
