Text
Hotel La Fayette,Washington, D. C.August 2, 1917.I am indeed very grateful to you for your kind reception of me the other day, and for your appreciation of the spirit of my errand. I feel that I have done my duty under the circumstances, and that there is no further use for my remaining in Washington. I therefore expect to leave here Saturday for New England, and I am hoping to go abroad next month. My object in going abroad, and especially in going to England, is to study the situation there in relation to the issues and democratic problems of the war as set forth by you in your various proclamations, and also as sketched by you in our conversation. I am going to try to interpret these issues both to the American and British people, for I am and have been heartily in sympathy with them. With best wishes I remain,
To
